Workshop on 'Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Chemistry of Superheavy Elements' was held in Advanced Science Research Center of JAERI at February 27-28 (2003). Efforts were paid to produce SHEs in several countries including Germany, Russia, France, and United States. In Japan, the production of element with Z=111 has been reported by RIKEN. In JAERI, investigations on fusion mechanism have been made in order to find an efficient way to produce SHEs. Chemistry on SHEs is quite active. In the SHE region, a wave function of outermost electron, which controls chemical properties of an element, is disturbed or changed by relativistic effects. This suggests that the SHEs have different chemical properties from those of lighter elements belonging to the same family. In the JAERI-tandem facility, chemistry of Rf and Db have been investigated by using actinide targets such as $^{248}$ Cm. In the workshop, discussions on the current status and future plans for the heavy element research were made.

The JAERI-KEK joint RIB project

JAERI and KEK-Institute of Particle and Nuclear Studies are collabarating to build an ISOL-type radioactive ion beam(RIB) acceleration system in the JAERI-Tokai tandem accelerator lab. In this project, the tandem accelerator is used as a proton beam driver to create RIB from fission products of a uranium target and a RIB accelerator already built by KEK will be installed in an old target room of the tandem accelerator lab. The beam energy is 1.1 MeV/nucleon, which is not sufficient for experiments related to nuclear reactions. They have a plan to boost the beams to 5 - 9 MeV/u by developing a pre-booster and using existing super-conducting tandem-booster. The plan of this project, acceleration divices and present status will be outlined in the RIB session of the CAARI.
